"Loving the Truth"

  • Sermon, Dr. Rayburn

  • text: 2Jn

  • John would not be in the same place with a heretic and enemy of the truth.

  • Heresies are not, as a rule, absurd doctrines which are obviously false, but usually subtle accommodations to the prevailing culture which lure men to adopt them to "fit in" with the prevailing winds.

    • they are an attempt to "go ahead" (v. 9)

  • The temptation to conformity and the fear of shame are powerful motivating forces for fallen man.

  • We cannot remain faithful to the truth and permit the doctrines of Christianity to be adjusted to accommodate the prevailing ideas of the age.

  • Accommodation is death to true doctrine.

  • If we are not on guard, and ready to bear the cross of the contempt of the world, then we too will be willing to accommodate our doctrine.

  • Heresies are not to be warded off with half-measures or a single warning–hence 2 John (and 1 and 3 John!).

  • The agents of antichrist stand ready to snatch away the truth from us and from our children.

  • Deceivers and heretics will take a mile if you give them an inch.
