"The Quotable Paul: What is the Chief End of Paul?"

  • Sermon, Pastor DeMass

  • text: Phl 3.7-11

  • Our relationship [with Christ] is both mental and emotional. It involves the mind and the affections. Knowing Christ is an emotional relationship, as well as an intellectual and volitional one.

    • We do ill to downplay the emotional aspect of our relationship with Christ.

  • What do we do when we don't "feel" close to Christ? As an act of our will and intellect we choose to believe the eternal promises and fidelity of Christ.

  • Love is a deep unity maintained by the will–whether we feel it or not.

  • "He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose."

  • We measure the worth of an object by what we are willing to give up to gain it and to suffer to keep it. What will you give up and/or suffer for Christ? Comforts? Money? Reputation? Paul considered all else rubbish/refuse.

  • Knowing Christ is THE relationship we have been created for and that alone which will bring us true happiness.
