Sermon: "Controversy"

  • text: Tit 1.10-16

  • There was a verb, to cretize, which meant to lie.

  • False theology leads to false practice, but very often the false practice is chosen first and then the false theology is invented to support it.

  • False teaching kills the church and thus individual believers.

  • The Church cannot rest, because the enemies of truth do not rest.

  • Deformations of orthodox teachings take their strength from the cultural mores of the time.

  • Heretics are usually effective because they are able; half-hearted measures will not prevail against them.

God protect us from all error;

Make our doctrine right and true.

Let Your truth inform our thoughts

And all we feel and speak and do.

Let us keep a constant vigil

'Gainst the heresies that harm

Sharply rebuke the devil's champions

Uphold us by Your might arm.
